A note written for the Chief Economist of the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA) after the kick-off discussion of its European Recovery Project. It puts together two areas, energy and banking, starting from the end of three debates: anthropogenic climate change is real; conventional crude oil peaked in 2006; and banks create and allocate credit rather than act as neutral intermediaries between savers and borrowers. It then asks what these mean for orthodox economic theory and for the prospects of economic growth.
